  • Will Montgomery is a successful professional football player and seemingly has it all. He’s not used to being told no, and certainly doesn’t take no for an answer. So when he turns his charms on his sister’s sexy rocker-chick friend Meg, he’s not only turned down, but met with open hostility, piquing his curiosity and libido. He’s determined to show her that he’s not the arrogant jock she thinks he is, and to get her into his bed.

Megan McBride is not impressed with Will Montgomery, his fat contract, fancy car, or his arrogant public persona. She doesn’t have time for a relationship, and if she’s learned anything in life, it’s that loving means losing, so she guards her heart ferociously. But she can’t deny the overwhelming attraction to the sexy, tattooed athlete, and when Will starts breaking down her defenses and grabs hold of her heart, will she be able to admit her feelings for him, or will her troubled past cause her to lose the first man she’s ever truly loved?
  • Cover: Another sweet romantic cover that's right up my alley.
This is probably my least favourite of the series so far.  I found it far too 'insta love', Meg goes from hating Will's guts, to dating him.
I still found it sweet and romantic, but I just liked the first two in the series a bit more, plus the little novella.
I still give it 3.5/5 stars.
Loving the series.

Booking Through Thursday 26/9/13

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Booking Through Thursday and a different question is posted every week.

Are “best” and “favorite” the same thing? If someone asked you “What’s the best book you ever read?” would the answer be the same as for “What’s your favorite?”

I think the two are pretty interchangeable.
Of course 'best' has connotations of the actual quality of the book- we're talking about the standard of writing, plot, etc.
Whereas favourite implies a certain subjectivity.  Just the actual feeling of fondness you have toward that book.
There are a couple of books where the two combine for me- the one that instantly springs to mind is The Fault In Our Stars.  Where not only was the writing impeccable, but the feelings that book evoked carved its place on my bookish heart.
Whereas something like Vanity Fair for example, with its status as a classic piece of literature - while it's writing is suppose to be fantastic- I really didn't enjoy it at all.  So I wouldn't count it as 'best' for me, or anywhere near a favourite.

Run The Game by Jason Myers

  • Paperback: 518 pages
  • Publisher: Simon Pulse (12 Jun 2012)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1442414324
  • ISBN-13: 978-1442414327
In this gritty novel from the author of Exit Here and Dead End, love is a high-priced and dangerous game: Play or be played.Alexander didn’t believe in love at first sight until he met Patti. She’s the kind of girl you hear about in songs: gorgeous, feisty, and dangerous. Being with Patti is better than any high, and he can’t live without her.

But Alexander’s not the only one who wants to be with Patti. Burke ruthlessly takes what he wants and will kill to protect what is his. And he won’t let Patti go without a fight. If Patti and Alexander are going to be together, their love will come at a steep price. Because some promises are meant to be broken, and not all debts can be paid in cash….

Cover: Like the simplicity of the cover.

This is going to be a hard book for me to review.
I'm not going to say that I hated this book, but I feel maybe it wasn't for me.
After finishing it I was so depressed.  The plot, the characters- all kinda brought me down.
I felt that Alex's 'love' for Patti was SO irrational.  It came out of nowhere.  And the whole insta-love thing is a bit of a pet peeve.
I'm all for YA tackling darker, grittier themes, but I feel this was TOO much for YA and was definitely more towards adult.  The sexual descriptions were disturbing, even for me at 21.
A lot of the music references were lost on me.  I feel they were meant to add some depth but fell flat for me.
The excessive swearing was irritating, I'm not a prude and don't mind reading swearing, but it was constant and was pointless.
I also didn't appreciate the meta moments of referencing himself and his novels in it.
Over all this book just wasn't for me.
1.5/5 stars.

Will Josh remember Heather when she needs him the most? Or will Victoria take advantage of this opportunity, pushing Heather away from Josh for good?

Faithful is the third book in the Wanted series by Kelly Elliott.
Cover:  Another cute, romantic cover.  I really like these.

Hmm.  This is going to be tough.
I didn't hate this book.
But I do have some issues with it.
This series is starting to feel very formulaic.
Girl likes guy.  Guy likes girl.  Personal drama.  Bitchy ex's trying to come between them.  Throw in some sex.
Nothing new really jumped out at me.
A big issue with this book was there were like six people's perspectives.  I felt it should have just been Josh and Heather's book.  It's made worse by the fact that everyone sounds the same.  They have no distinctive qualities.  Even the adult speak like teenagers so it becomes even harder to distinguish whose who.
Another issue I have is there our characters are in their early twenties, and yet they all want to breed like crazy.  They just want to keep having babies.  Seriously- all of them.  There must be something else they want right?  I just found it disturbing how much of the book was taken over by that.
However I did enjoy Josh and Heather's story, when it was actually their story.
Over all a tad disappointing.
3/5 stars.

Booking Through Thursday 19/9/13

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Booking Through Thursday and a different question is posted every week.

Connected to last week’s—it’s one of the ways writing has changed. Books from a century or two ago spent huge swaths of text describing locations and character traits, but modern writing does all of this in shorthand. You might know a character is short with blond hair and blue eyes, but the author leaves the rest for you to figure out on your own. The writer might tell you the story takes place at a beachside town, but leaves the details to your imagination. Why do you suppose this is? Is it that we have shorter attention spans these days? That, bombarded with video and photos as we are, we don’t NEED every detail of an unknown scene described, because we have a stock of images already in our heads?

This is a really interesting question.
I definitely think that attention span is an important point.  Of course I can only speak for myself, but I find if I get too bogged down in detail- character detail, setting detail, etc, it slows everything up.  I want to gather those things from the actual feel of what's going on, of the atmosphere.  I want to be shown, not told.
I feel that a lot of authors fall pray to info- dumping.  Just dumping a massive amount of say- backstory, on us all at once.  Like, ah this character has a troubled past- I shall tell you all about it for these ten pages and never mention it again.
So I definitely believe we don't need every single detail, our minds fill in a lot of the blanks from things we've read in the past.

Playing The Odds by Nora Roberts

  • Paperback: 560 pages
  • Publisher: Mills & Boon (2 Aug 2013)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0263904598
The cards were stacked, though neither of them knew it. Serena MacGregor's father left nothing to chance when he sent Justin Blade -- part Comanche and all gambler -- on a Caribbean cruise. His daughter was evading her responsibility to produce grandchildren by working as a blackjack dealer on the CELEBRATION. Odds were they'd meet.

Serena's father had his hopes riding on what would happen when they did. Win, lose or draw, they were meant for each other, proving indisputably in this case that lucky in cards did not mean unlucky in love.

Cover:  It's a cute little cover.

Ok.  I collect Nora Robert's books, picking them up sporadically either from discount bookstores or supermarket charts.  And Some of hers I've loved (cough, cough...WHISKEY BEACH!!!) and there's been others I've liked less.  But I've read a couple in her MacGregor family, and they've been some of my favourites.  As I've read them all out of order (due to the whole picking them up sporadically thing) I hadn't read Justin and Serena's book, and it's one that I've wanted to for a while, so when it appeared in the supermarket chart, I got it and read it the next day.  And I do mean in that day.
It's a short little romance.  I loved finally knowing they're story, but I feel the 'dominant, alpha male' thing was overdone.  One minute Serena is all independent and fiery, and the next thing he almost brow beats her (not physical abuse- just to be clear).
Over all I really enjoyed it.  A definite quick, escapist read.
4/5 stars.

Reason To Breathe by Rebecca Donovan

  • Paperback: 544 pages
  • Publisher: Penguin (17 Jan 2013)
  • ISBN-10: 0141348445
  • Breathing Series #1
  • An passionate love. A brutal betrayal. Unwavering hope.

In a town where most people worry about what to be seen in and who to be seen with, Emma Thomas would rather not be seen at all. She's more concerned with feigning perfection, pulling down her sleeves to conceal the bruises. Emma doesn't want anyone to know how far from perfect her life truly is.

When Emma unexpectedly finds love, it challenges her to recognize her own worth - but at the risk of revealing the terrible secret she's desperate to hide.

  • Cover: This is one cover that's grown on me.  When I first saw it, I didn't care much about it.  It didn't grab my attention in any way.  However, I do like that the whole trilogy matches, and together on the shelf, all in silver, they look great.
  • And now that I've read it, the girl on the cover, the rain - it's all relevant and significant, and makes me like the cover that little bit more.
This was recommended to me by a YouTube subscriber because of how much I love the book Heart On a Chain by Cindy C. Bennett, and they thought if I liked that, I'd enjoy this series.
Now.  That thought obviously brought about some seriously high expectations as Heart On a Chain is one of, if not, my favourite book.
It took me quite a while to get into this one.   I found the first 100 pages or so really slow going.  I also found it difficult to connect to Emma (side note- Emma, Emily, Em?  Pick one and stick with it.  THAT I found irritating.  Emma as a nickname for Emily?  Really? Lame.)
But after that, it picked up pace and I managed to connect to Emma and sympathise with her situation.
I did think that the author made her too perfect.  She artistic.  Athletic.  Oh and let's not forget super brainy.  Ah yes- and guys want her but don't approach her as she tries to be invisible.
I do feel it's too long.  Heart On a Chain is a stand alone and scarcely 300 pages- but it's packed with feels.  Whereas Reason To Breathe is over 500 pages and the first in a trilogy, and feels drawn out.  There's a lot of things I found unnecessary- the overly descriptive passages of people's houses for example.
I HATED the love triangle we got for about 100 pages.  I hate them anyway, but this one just really riled me.  It made me hate Emma for those 100 pages.
The actual love interest with Evan was great.  I loved him.  He was a great love interest.
The cliff hanger was fantastic and definitely made me want to continue the trilogy- I just hope there are no more love triangles because that will disappoint me.
Over all it wasn't a perfect read, but I did really enjoy it and would recommend it for NA fans.
4/5 stars.

BLOGTOUR: Gargoyle Addiction by Livia Olteano

  • Format: Kindle Edition
  • File Size: 443 KB
  • Print Length: 240 pages
Summonari don’t trust. Under their command, they summon any number of creatures from the Otherwolds—but never trust them outside of the summoning.
Gargoyles don’t love. Fierce descendants of dragons, they function on power and fear—never love.

Karla isn’t the happily-ever-after type of girl. No territory-hungry guy is going to stick flags all over her unclaimed grounds.
Kann’s world is death and betrayal. As Dar Primus of Haus Varis, he’s expected to follow tradition but he’s not your regular gargoyle. In fact, he’s anything but.

One fateful Friday night, Otherworlds collide. Stuck together in one world or another, Karla and Kann face everything from Awakenings and turbulent love to Festnavals and bloodthirsty scorned suitors.
If there’s one thing they can’t escape, it’s the addiction to each other. And they’ve got it bad.

Excerpt

Excerpt from Chapter 1 of Gargoyle Addiction by Livia Olteano

I wasn’t the happily-ever-after girl; I’d known that for a good while. Becoming the adorable housewife or the poster girl for mommy of the month would be someone else’s job, never mine. Considering my family history, I’d most likely die before age thirty-five. I couldn’t have kids thanks to a stupid accident from when I was ten. Sure, men drooled to flag my territory first thing when we met, it was their thing. Mike thought it had to do with my responsible aura and good karma, but my karma sucked if you asked me. I was false advertisement: my grounds were barren and the structures would implode in a couple years. Best-case scenario, the guy would fall for me…and I’d be crushed to give him the ‘good’ news. Worst-case scenario, I’d fall for him and he’d leave well before that particular confession point. Either way, it wasn’t looking like much of a plan.
I shook my head. “You know, if you’re that desperate to find him a date we can always put up some ad or something. They have places online for that, too. Plus I’d hate to see how that blonde’s lips would twitch at the news you were trying to hook me up with her sugar daddy.”
“Karla…I just want you to be happy. And I would be happy to know my knucklehead of a brother has someone like you to go home to.”
My eyes fixed on the moon. “I am happy with things as they are. You’re my best friend and I love you—you know that. But just because you found the perfect guy for you doesn’t mean you’re on this sacred mission to pair off everyone you know.”
He snorted, obviously unimpressed with my deflecting skills. Well I just had to bring in the big guns, then.
“Is Joseph coming home tonight?”
It was a sly counter-attack. Joseph—my boss and his lover—was a renowned workaholic. He was the epic in the all-stars hall of workaholic-ness. I knew—I was Joseph’s personal assistant after all. The man was the type who forgot to eat if you didn’t pester him with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Since my personal leave was starting Monday, I wondered if he’d die of starvation.

“He said he’d be home sometime tonight…” Mike muttered.

Fevered Souls (Season 1) by S.K Falls

  • Print Length: 216 pages
  • After I left for college, I thought I’d never see Eden again. But I found myself headed back four years later, destitute and unable to find a job anywhere else. Still, I was adamant nothing would keep me there for long.

Then I met the intoxicating Dax Allard. Copper-colored eyes, skin that emanated an exceptional heat, and a host of strange talents… It wasn't long before I was drunk on him.

But Dax’s past was darker than mine, teeming with ancient secrets. Falling for him could cost me my life.

I had two choices: walk away or deal with the perilous consequences.

It was no choice at all.

    --

Fevered Souls Season 1 is the omnibus of the first season of the Fevered Souls serial novel.

Episodes included: Possession, Betrothal, Illumination, Initiation, and Judgment.

Approximate word count: 60,000 words or 170 pages.
Cover:  I love the sexy, romantic cover.  I'm a sucker for those.

So...it was quite Twilight-formulaic.

Young girl/woman + Small town + Mysterious & beautiful guy + a miraculous,
unexplainable rescue + Girl googles research + guy trying to push girl away =

familiar territory

There was even the 'I know what you are' moment.
A Rosalie type character called Victorine.
Dax has 'protective' / stalker tendencies, oh and he loves the way Cara smells.
Let's not forget the Volturi like rulers called the Astaroth.

Over all I found I couldn't really get into or love this series, because every page just smacked of Twilight.
And I'm a Twilight fan!
The similarities were just to much for me.

But when she finds her life has been made unrecognizable, she’s forced into an explosive study of the original design for her life that just may have her regretting every wish she ever made.

Excerpt

I gape up at him, the fear beginning to course through my veins. “Who are you?”
“A friend.” He answers in an even enough tone, but at the same time, his face begins to glow the color of amber, making him look warm and unusually vibrant. I’ve never known any being able to radiate such a glow. Any being from Earth, that is.
“A friend?” I manage to whisper back before swallowing a gulp. “Are-are you human?” I’m half kidding, but after years of watching realistic science fiction movies and reading a library of fantasy novels, I think I mean the question more than I want to admit. However, he doesn’t answer me. He averts his eyes, blinking rapidly like he’s unsure of the situation.
Again, I’m at a loss of what to think. I thought I asked a pretty straightforward question and he can’t even answer that. By his omission, I have to assume he’s trying to tell me he isn’t human!
Is this really happening? And, more importantly, if he’s not human, then what is he?
My brain pores through a dozen images at once, my chest heaving from the excitement. I flash to movies, T.V. shows, graphic novels, and to my own imagination as I consider what life form James could be. While I try to convince myself I’m jumping to conclusions, that of course this is all a misunderstanding or perhaps an elaborate hoax, something else itches in the back of my mind. That something whispers: Haven’t you always considered the existence of other worlds? Discussed the possibility a hundred times with Tommy?
The answer to both questions is an emphatic yes. I decide right then, despite all reason, I know what James is.
“I think I know what you are,” I remark feebly.
He turns to me with a spark of expectation in his eyes, still glowing, still warm.
“You came to Earth with that star last night, didn’t you?”
Blood rushes to his cheeks, giving him an even brighter supernatural glow, and then I know I have my answer.
“That’s it, isn’t it?” I sit upright, gripping the sheet into my fists. “You’re from another planet. That’s how you have the power to heal.”
He pales for a second, but amazingly, he doesn’t deny it. He flickers his lashes upward like he’s searching the ceiling for his reply. After a moment, he shakes his head of soft curls that brush his neck before redirecting his intense expression back on me. He licks his lips and smiles pensively, but I feel the same need as before to shy away; whether it’s from shock or from a loss of focus I don’t know, but holding his gaze is next to impossible.
My mind is all aflutter trying to come to grips with what I’m being confronted to believe.

“Incredible. I was right all along,” I murmur, commenting to myself. “Aliens do exist.”

Cover:  I love the vibrant blue of this cover.  I love that it's a relevant cover.

I've heard so many great things about Amanda Hocking.  How her books are such a success story, how successful she has been because of self publishing and the ebook.  So I've wanted to read some of her books for a while, having had this one and her Trylle trilogy on my shelf for over a year.  I finally picked this one up as part of a buddy read.
I had high hopes for this one.  I love mermaids/sirens etc, but had only read one other book about them.
I found this sooooo slow.  I struggled with it.  It's just over 300 pages.  Normally this would take me no more than 3 days to read.   It took me a week.  A sure sign that my enjoyment level was low.
I found the first 100 pages really repetitive.  It just seemed like 'ooh there's those 3 girls.  They give me the creeps.  Didn't there use to be four of them?'
Over, and over.  That made up a third of the book!
The event mentioned in the synopsis, Gemma waking up groggy and knowing something is different...yeah takes 100 pages to happen.
Basically for me it had great premise, but it took to long to kick in.
Gemma... I never felt for her as a protagonist.
Harper, I really liked her character.  How she's basically taken the place of their mum.  Has a lot of responsibilty.
Daniel...ahh I loved him.  He was the highlight of the book for me.
Over all it wasn't a bad book.  I did enjoy the humour through out, and the basic plot was sound.  The main issue for me was pacing.
I would definitely continue the series, but it's not one I'm in a rush to.
3/5 stars.

After 450 years of living, Nastasya Crowe should have more of a handle on this whole immortal thing....

After a deadly confrontation at the end of Darkness Falls, the second Immortal Beloved novel, Nastasya Crowe is, as she would put it, so over the drama. She fights back against the dark immortals with her own brand of kick-butt magick...but can she fight against true love? In the satisfying finale to the Immortal Beloved trilogy, ex-party-girl immortal Nastasya ends a 450-year-old feud and learns what “eternally yours” really means.

Laced with historical flashbacks and laugh-out-loud dialogue, the Immortal Beloved trilogy is a fascinating and unique take on what it would mean to live forever.

Cover:  Not really a big fan of close ups on covers, particularly of eyes.

I've loved this trilogy from start to finish.  It's a fantastic series that I highly recommend.
In this third and final installment we learn more about Nastasya's family history, as well as meeting River's four brothers that have previously only been mentioned.
I love every character in this book.  I like that as immortals they've each lived long lives, and yet each characters story is different.
I like the love interest of Reyn and Nastasya, it obviously started in book 1, but I was left wanting MORE of it.  I definitely wanted more of them 'together' in it.
This was a fantastic conclusion to the series.  A lot of questions were wrapped up, the humour and wit was laugh-put-loud funny in some places, and I was hooked from page 1.
This series is a must read.
5/5 stars!  Not only for Eternally Yours but for the trilogy as a whole.
