'From #1 NY times Bestselling Author, Barbara Freethy, comes a romantic new contemporary series about the Callaways, a big, blended Irish family born to serve and protect. The second oldest of the Callaway clan, Aiden Callaway veered from the family tradition of urban firefighting and became a smokejumper, never questioning his choice until the job took the life of his friend, Kyle, and left Aiden with injuries and fractured memories. Everyone blames Aiden for what happened, but he doesn't remember, nor is he sure he wants to remember. The truth may clear Aiden of blame but destroy Kyle's reputation and hurt the people he left behind. Aiden seeks help from an unlikely partner… Sara had always been untouchable, sweet, innocent, his sister's best friend, and the girl next door. But one reckless night in their youth took their relationship to a new level. Sara has never forgiven or forgotten the way Aiden brought it crashing down, but she's no longer that girl with the crazy crush. She's a woman in search of her own truth. The sparks between Aiden and Sara have been smoldering for a very long time. Sara is afraid to take another chance on a man who broke her heart, and Aiden knows better than anyone how dangerous an intense fire can be. As teenagers they weren’t ready for each other. Are they now?
Cover: I’m a sucker for sweet, romantic covers. So this is perfect for me.
When I was told about this series- what sold it to me was
the comparison to Bella Andre’s Sullivan’s series, and the knowledge that both
authors are good friends. And Bella
Andre is one of my all time favourite adult, contemporary romance authors, with
her Sullivans series being a staunch favourite.
And I was drawn to The Callaways because I thought it would
be another huge family saga to sink my teeth into.
I love reading series about large families, where you get to
know them all so well as a family unit, but then also get to see them break off
individually and find love.
And that is exactly what I got with this.
On a Night Like This is an introduction to a larger than
life family in the Callaways.
Aiden is a smoke jumper.
Or at least he was until the accident that left him injured and took the
life of his best friend. Can he return
to smoke jumping if he potentially made a decision that got his friend
killed. Can he jump into fires again...and can he jump into a relationship with Sara?
Sara is a successful lawyer, on track to make partner in the firm. But while she has success in her career- her family life leaves a lot to be desired. She can't seem to get the attention or affection of her father, who is simply indifferent to her, but she just doesn't know why. She decides to try one last chance at them connecting, and instead a fire brings Aiden back into her life.
Sara crushed- hard- on Aiden when they were younger, bad boy and the girl next door.
But his teenage rejection after a hot kiss, hit her hard.
Can things work between them now, years later?
It was a really sweet, contemporary romance. There were times when I didn't believe the chemistry between Aiden and Sara - I just wanted to feel so much more from them.
But I did really enjoy it, and when I finished I was satisfied with the ending, and immediately started the second book in the series, So This Is Love.
[And by now I have actually read every book in this series back to back.]
Highly recommend for romance books everywhere.
Read from March 13 to 15, 2015.
