I stop dead and the rest of the crew stills alongside me.  Elian's gloved hand hovers dangerously close to mine, and though I feel the air spark and warm between us, I don't look at him.  I can't.  I can only stare ahead my feet elves farther into the snow the longer I stay still.  But I can't move either.  Ahead there are wonders.  There is the palace, carved from the last breaths of my goddess Keto.

Synopsis
Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most--a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen and or remain a human forever.
The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby--it’s his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good--But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?

TEASER TUESDAY 'The Tattooist of Auschwitz'

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

-Grab your current read

- Open to a random pageShare two “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser.

This week's teaser comes from The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris.

36582334The Tattooist of Auschwitz is based on the true story of Lale and Gita Sokolov, two Slovakian Jews who survived Auschwitz and eventually made their home in Australia. In that terrible place, Lale was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival - literally scratching numbers into his fellow victims' arms in indelible ink to create what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust. Lale used the infinitesimal freedom of movement that this position awarded him to exchange jewels and money taken from murdered Jews for food to keep others alive. If he had been caught, he would have been killed; many owed him their survival.

There have been many books about the Holocaust - and there will be many more. What makes this one so memorable is Lale Sokolov's incredible zest for life. He understood exactly what was in store for him and his fellow prisoners, and he was determined to survive - not just to survive but to leave the camp with his dignity and integrity intact, to live his life to the full. Terrible though this story is, it is also a story of hope and of courage. It is also - almost unbelievably - a love story. Waiting in line to be tattooed, terrified and shaking, was a young girl. For Lale - a dandy, a jack-the-lad, a bit of a chancer - it was love at first sight, and he determined not only to survive himself but to ensure that Gita did, too. His story - their story - will make you weep, but you will also find it uplifting. It shows the very best of humanity in the very worst of circumstances.

Like many survivors, Lale and Gita told few people their story after the war. They eventually made their way to Australia, where they raised a son and had a successful life. But when Gita died, Lale felt he could no longer carry the burden of their past alone. He chose to tell his story.

TEASER - from 15% in

"A shot rings out.  Men flinch.  Someone falls.  Lale looks in the direction of the shot, only for Pepan to grab his face and twist his head away.
A group of SS, mostly young, walk towards Pepan and Lale, guarding an older SS officer.  Mid- to late forties, straight backed in his immaculate uniform, his cap sitting precisely on his head - a perfect mannequin, thinks Lale."

"Rose woke up sprawled across Drake as though his body were her personal mattress, his chest her pillow.
Last night, she'd been too exhausted to seduce him the way he'd continually seduced her.  Heck, it barely took one of his smiles and the lightest brush of his fingertips over her cheek for her to end up completely lost in him.  She'd promised herself she wouldn't use him to drown her sorrows, but she'd simply been unable to keep herself from kissing him- and then showing him on an even more intimate level just how good he made her feel.  Inside and out."

“You two are my best wags, and you know it,” said Red.

"I quickly clicked through the other links in the digest to find the same picture with similar captions and articles.  Alarmed, I sat back and thought about what this meant.  If one kiss was headline news, what chance would Gideon and I have to make a relationship work?
My hands weren't quite steady as I closed the browser tabs.  I hadn't considered the press coverage, but I should have.  "Damn it."

Wxasperated, she used the bloody hand to push her hair back, although it instantly tumbled forward again.  "Not now," she hissed to whatever demon thought this was an appropriate time to give her visions."

Aliyana.  Damn Aliyana Lucia for getting in my fucking head.
From the minute I'd seen her two nights ago in the gallery, catching me by the marble angel, I'd been shocked speechless.
I'd never seen any chick look like her.  I'd never seen anyone with eyes that bright, hair that dark or a smile that fucking blinding."

I smile.
"Well, I do love you.  More than I thought I could, more than I should.  But I don't care.  I don't care if it makes other people mad, or if I don't deserve you and I don't care if you don't like it because I do love you and I am going to forever, no matter what."

Real. Damn. Hard."

Thunder rumbled around the distant edge of a dark gray sky."
