Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is all about sharing the books that I'm waiting to be released.

This weeks book is: Abandon by Meg Cabot, released September 2nd.

Meg Cabot is one of my all time favourite authors and to find out she had released a YA novel re-working the myth of Persephone I had to have it but then discovered it wasn't being released in the UK until September, and yes, desperate sobbing followed.
I'm not so keen on the UK cover but meh, it's pretty and all but one of those girls in the dresses that are popping up everywhere.

Booking Through Thursday

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Booking Through Thursday and a different question is posted every week.

Am I REALLY the only person who feels this way? When is the last time you read a history book? Historical biography? You know, something that took place in the past but was REAL.

I have to read history books all the time because I'm taking History as an A level at college.  Text books and biographies of Anglo-French rivalry and the Wars of The Roses as well as on the Crimean War, Boer War and World War I.
I do actually enjoy historical books...*sigh* yup I'm a history buff.  But I do like classic books because of the historical element, as well as historical fiction.
So yeah...I'm constantly reading historical books.

Kiss Me I'm Irish by Bella Street

Received from author
Paperback: 308 pages
  • Publisher: CreateSpace (April 19, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1461110564
  • ISBN-13: 978-1461110569
  • Emily Musgrave is heading in a direction she never wanted to go in Regency England--namely a convent to turn her from her waywardness. But it's more loneliness than rebellion that motivates her to escape her certain fate.
  • Liam Jackson is going nowhere fast in mordern-day Tennessee.  Playing his Dobro in seedy bars and backward dives along with his fiddling sister, Tinker, is doing nothing for his music career--and even less for the dark places in his soul.  Pixie mischief can not only change time lines, it can change hearts.  Because sometimes a girl just needs a little magic in her life.

First of all I have to say a HUGE thank you to Bella Street for sending this to me, it was amazing!  I was devastated when I couldn't find a copy here.  It's definitely now one of my favourites.  When I first heard about it I thought it was the perfect book for me, time travel, piskeys, regency girl, hot Irish musician, magic, romance and did I mention HOT IRISH MUSICIAN?
I wasn't disappointed at all!

Plot:  Because she didn't want to marry a man old enough to be her father, regency girl Emily Musgrave is on her way to the convent on the orders of her strict Aunt Tremaine.  But piskey magic takes Emily from 1813 England to 2011 Tennessee, and into the care of Tinker and Liam.  A brother and sister that play their music in various downbeat, seedy bars to earn a living.

Liam wants to be a successful musician but he seems to be holding himself back, because unbeknown to Emily, of a tragedy in his past.
Liam is suspicious of Emily, her story of time travel is too extraordinary to believe, is her motive to scam them or is she some crazy stalker fan girl?  But despite his suspicions Liam is attracted to Emily.
What results is the comedy of Emily trying to get used to the new and very different world around her, as well as her growing feelings for Liam.
They might just be perfect for each other if Liam can overcome his suspicions and Emily can manage to stay in 2011.

Characters:

Emily- Has a soft spot for the Irish.  Finds herself in many hilarious situations in her new environment.  She's attracted to Liam almost immediately.  Strong-willed and determined not to marry some old guy & then just as determined to escape life in a convent.  She soon learns to love aspects of the modern world and doesn't want to leave.

Liam- Has Irish heritage but was born and raised in America.  He wants to be a successful musician but holds himself back, but instead had found himself stuck playing downbeat, seedy bars, punishing himself.  When he starts to fall for Emily he thinks she deserves better and tries to make her see that.

Tinker- Liam's sister.  She's quirky and eccentric.  Can't seem to stop herself from pinching things...and takes a particular shine to gold.  She's kind to Emily, helping her get used to everything that's new to her and seems much more accepting of Emily's story of time travel that Liam.

Writing Style:  Both Emily and Liam's perspective were written but predominantly Emily's.  The writing was amazingly fast paced making it a quick read but it also hooked me in from the beginning and I didn't want to put it down.

Rating: 5/5 stars without a doubt!  This is definitely one of my favourite books now, there was nothing I didn't like about it.  The characters were charming and each had the humorous moments.  It was a sweet romance with a touch of the paranormal.  The romance was well paced, the attraction was there but the true feelings gradually built up.  I would definitely recommend this for fans of paranormal YA and for those that like romance.  For me this books definitely stands out among others with an original plot and unique characters that just make the book adorable.  I couldn't put this book, and when I had to I was thinking about it and getting back to reading.  I would absolutely read anything Bella Street writes after reading this.  This is book one in the Time For Love Series and I really hope that I will be able to get hold of the other when they come out because this was an exceptional story and I will tell anyone that will still listen to me talk about it.

Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore

  • Paperback: 416 pages
  • Publisher: Corgi Childrens (7 July 2011)
  • ISBN-10: 0552564931
  • ISBN-13: 978-0552564939

A spooky, electrifying love story.
Amy Goodnight's family are far from normal. She comes from a long line of witches, and grew up surrounded by benevolent spirits and kitchen spells. All fairly harmless, but Amy can't wait to get to college and escape the "family business".
But things take a darker turn when she and her sister Phin spend the summer looking after Aunt Hyacinth's ranch. Amy is visited by a midnight spectre who is clearly trying to send her a message. It seems that the discovery of an old grave on a neighbour's land has been the catalyst for an apparent ghost uprising.
Aided by local friends and Ben, the handsome cowboy who just can't take his eyes off Amy, the sisters investigate. And they soon find that there's something strange and dangerous going on, deep in the heart of Texas...

I have seen this a lot in the YA book community, and I haven't read Rosemary Clemet-Moore's other book The Splendor Falls but thought this sounded good and stood out amongst other YA paranormal fiction.

Cover:  This is a great paranormal YA cover, the girl is just how I imagined the protagonist Amy to look.

Plot:  Amy Goodnight knows she comes from a long line of kitchen witches, but ever since a bad experience with a ghost when she was younger she has avoided interaction with the supernatural, instead trying to make her and her family appear normal to everyone, acting as a shield and buffer for her family.
But when she and her sister Phin look after their Aunt's ranch Amy has little choice but to be near the supernatural once again.  Human remains are found on the neighbouring McCulloch ranch, for which Ben McCulloch seems to blame the Goodnights, as well as blaming them for the rumours about the ghost on the ranch on which Amy and Ben argue.
Suddenly Amy finds herself bound to helping a ghost as well as being attracted to the moody Ben McCulloch.  But are the sinister happenings really down to Amy's ghost or are they the result of a more human culprit...or both?

Character:

Amy (Amaryllis) Goodnight-  Is not comfortable with magic and the supernatural- she's been repressing that part of herself for years, when the ghost appears a part of her she's buried resurfaces.  A fiery temper leads to confrontations with the handsome but moody Ben.

Phin (Delphinium) Goodnight-  More accepting of her talents and family.  Is into her science experiments and numerous gadgets, some to help ghost hunt.

Ben McCulloch- A moody but handsome cowboy.  After his father's death he had to leave school to help his Mother on the ranch.  He blames the Goodnight's for the town's gossip about the ranch ghost but is secretly attracted to Amy, no matter how he tries to hide it.

Hyacinth Goodnight-  Amy and Phin's aunt.  She is on a cruise and so needs them to look after the ranch.

Mark- An archaeology student there for the finds.  He's interested in Phin but she is oblivious to flirting.

The Kellys- A family that once owned part of the McCulloch land and still seem bitter.

Steve Sparks- Helps Ben out on the ranch.

Writing Style- Overall it was a standard writing style.  Some parts were a little slow and I thought some parts were unnecessarily over described.  The whole book is from Amy's perspective.

Rating- 4/5 stars, because I really enjoyed this book and the supernatural mystery really kept me guessing up until a certain point when it became blindingly obvious and I was frustrated that the protagonist remained ignorant of something that was practically screaming at me.
It was well structured and well thought out, and I felt it had an original plot and wasn't recycled from something else.
I really loved the love/hare sparring between Amy and Ben, it was refreshing and amusing to read.  You knew the attraction was there.
I am very interested in anthropology so the references to it because of the human remains were something that I really enjoyed reading about, a forensic situation in a paranormal YA.
I also really liked Phin's eccentric character as she really was funny to read, however I wish there was more with her romantic interest, Mark.  I wanted to know what happened with them and sadly I didn't get to.

This week's book is: Witclanders by Lena Coakley
Hardcover: 416 pages

  • Publisher: Atheneum Books (30 Aug 2011)

Jessie Hearts NYC by Keris Stainton

Giveaway Win.

Paperback: 240 pages
  • Publisher: Orchard (7 July 2011)
  • Language English
  • ISBN-10: 1408304287
  • ISBN-13: 978-1408304280

Jessie's just arrived in New York, hoping to forget about her awful ex.

New Yorker Finn is in love with his best friend's girlfriend.

They might be perfect together, but in a city of eight million people, will they ever find each other?

I was so excited when I won this book on a Goodreads giveaway- this is my first giveaway win, and it sounded like a perfect, light summer read.

Cover: In person that cover has a gorgeous shiney gold background and the empire state building is relevant (I love it when covers have relevance and purpose) as it plays an important in the story, drawing it all together and of course is an iconic New York image.  I also like the street sign with the title- cute touch.

Plot: Finally Jessie is in New York.  She has forever been obsessed with the place and she's not there just to sight see the places she's always dreamt of but also to stay with her Mother that has moved there.
She's getting over her ex- and where better than the place she has always wanted to be and having the chance to reconnect with her Mother.
New Yorker Finn ha a lot on his mind- his summer job at his father's insurance company is far from exciting, thinking of a way to tell his parents he wants to major in architecture and not business, aswell as struggling with his feelings for his best friend's girlfriend.
Jessie and Finn might be perfect for each other but in such a big city will they not only keep being in the same place at the same time but really find each other?

Characters:

Jessie- She has always felt drawn to New York, like she belongs there.  At first she thinks there's a chance for romance with Ben but then learns that that's not going to happen...
Can she find Finn in a city of eight million people?

Emma- Jessie's best friend.  Is in New York with her for the summer.  Offers support and advice, a great and humorous friend.

Finn- Struggling with his feelings of guilt because of his attraction to his best friend's girlfriend, and his father's expectations.  He loves the empire state building to the point of obsession and started his love of architecture.
Will he realise his feelings for Sam aren't real and that there is someone perfect for him out there...maybe just around the corner.

Scott- Finn's best friend.  Is completely unaware of his friend's feelings his girlfriend.

Sam- Scott's gorgeous girlfriend.

Natalie- Jessie's workaholic, playwright mother.

Ben- The gorgeous lead in Jessie's mother's play.

Writing Style:  A simple writing style.  I really liked having both Jessie's and Finn's points of view- so you do get to see how well they'd go together.

Rating: 3/5 stars.  I really enjoyed the setting of the book and Keris Stainton described New York so well I felt I was there.
I found myself really wanting Jessie and Finn to meet because as the reader you KNEW they were perfect for each other.
The coincidences or fate of them being in the same places at the same reminded me of one of my favourite movies, Serendipity so I liked it for that reason.
However I felt that Jessie and Finn should have interacted more as the end romance didn't leave me feeling that their romance was convincing.  Sure they're perfect for each other and as the reader you've read about them and know that, but how to THEY know that when they're hardly spoken to each other.
I also didn't like a storyline involving Jessie's mother Natalie (I don't want to spoil anything but it involves her boyfriend and it creeped me out a little).
Overall it was an enjoyable read.  I would recommend it if you have read and enjoyed Keris Stainton's first book Della says OMG, and you like realistic, contemporary romance.

This week the book at the top of my wishlist is...

Ok so this has been out for some time now and I have heard mixed things about it in the blogo-sphere but it sounds great so I really want to check it out and see for myself.  Plus the cover is beautiful.  I don't think I can wait for the paperback cover to be released next March so I will probably get the hardback edition.

Sophie & Carter by Chelsea Fine

Received from publisher

  • Reading level: Young Adult
  • Paperback: 128 pages
  • Publisher: Acacia Publishing, Inc. (June 20, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1935089447
  • ISBN-13: 978-1935089445

While other high school seniors are dreaming about their futures, Sophie and Carter are just trying to make it through each day. Carter is overwhelmed by issues at home as he struggles to support his mother. Meanwhile, next door neighbor Sophie is left to care for her three younger siblings in place of their absent and troubled mother. All that holds these two best friends together is each other, and knowing that each night they'll sit together on Sophie's front porch swing and escape from reality, if just for awhile. But as their relationship reaches a turning point and high school graduation nears, will their friendship become something more?

Thanks to Chelsea Fine for asking her publisher to send this to me, I was dying to read it and I wasn't disappointed.

Cover: I know that it's just a guy and girl hugging in jeans but I really love it.  The simplicity adds to its cuteness and it suits the book completely.

Plot: Sophie Hartman and Carter Jax aren't normal teenagers.  They don't have the chance to be.  Their troubled, hectic lives only see contentment in the evenings they spend together on a porch swing.
Sophie's mother disappears for months at a time leaving Sophie with the responsibility of looking after her three younger siblings, and Carter suffered violence at the hands of his father and now looks after his damaged Mother that also suffered at his father's hands.
Sophie and Carter support each other, they're the only person that understands what the other goes through, they know all there is to know about the other- every tear and scar, and as a result are best friends.  The book follows their realisation that among that support, understanding and friendship there is also love.  A real and true love.

Characters:

Sophie- Spends her time trying to cope with school and caring for her three younger siblings.  She hates it when it gets to the point that she has to track her Mother down for money for food and rent.  She witnessed the violence that Carter experienced and was always there for him.

Carter- Carter also has to balance school life with troubles with his home life.  Even though his father is no longer around, his life it still hectic and troubled having to cope with his mentally damaged Mother.  Sophie brings calm and comfort into his day.

Writing Style: Chelsea Fine has a great writing style, her debut novel was fast paced and the 128 pages flew by.  I really enjoyed the alternating character perspective of Sophie and Carter, so I got to know the thoughts and feelings  of both protagonists.

Rating: 5/5 stars.  I love it's guts! Even though this book is only 128 pages, so easily a one sitting read, I loved every single one.  I really felt for the characters and their circumstances and found myself wishing for them to admit their feelings and devoured the book to find out when they would.  I felt that Chelsea Fine successfully conveyed a real and beautiful love.  I was sad when it ended, I could have read on and on.  Chelsea Fine will also be releasing a paranormal romance and I am definitely looking forward to that and I would read anything she writes from now on.
I would recommend this for fans of contemporary, realistic YA fiction and romance, it's definitely a favourite of mine.

Colin Preston Rocked and Rolled by Bert Murray

Received from author.

  • Paperback: 256 pages
  • Publisher: Createspace (26 Jan 2011)
  • Language English
  • ISBN-10: 1439275300
  • ISBN-13: 978-1439275306

Meet Colin Preston. 19 years old and a student at Elerby University in upstate New York.
He drinks too much. Lives for the Beatles, John Lennon and classic rock.
Falls for the most beautiful sophomore on campus.
His life is about to change forever.
Funny. Moving. Honest. Raw.
An entertaining coming of age novel about friendship,
music, first love and betrayal.
From Colin Preston Rocked And Rolled:
"Maybe she was out of my league. What made me think I could get a girl like her? What made me think I could keep her?"
"How far is too far? When you love a band so much that its songs fill the empty spaces inside your head and heart, is that too far? A band could become more important than your family or friends. John, Paul, George and Ringo spoke to me. Jasmine would see when she'd been with me a little longer. She'd understand me completely. I had to give her time."

This is not a YA novel and is recommended for ages 18 and up.  Contains sex and drug references, and adult language.

Thanks to Bert Murray for sending this to meet.  It's different to what I normally read and I found that I enjoyed it, probably for this reason.

Cover:  Ok so the people on the cover kind of scare me, I think that it's because to me they look unreal...almost like stepford wife type robots.  So it's not my favourite cover.

Plot:  Colin Preston Rocked and Rolled is a story packed full of life, love, betrayal and loss all set to a Beatles soundtrack.
It's i985 and Colin can't believe his luck when he starts going out with Jasmine- the hottest girl in school.  It's too good to be true.  Soon they start to argue all the time and Colin can't keep up with her mood swings.
When he's deceived he finds himself struggling to cope, falling behind in his classes and an emerging friendship with the Spanish Lit teacher teaches him the lessons taught within the lyrics of his favourite band's music and eventually leaving him able to feel and love again.

Characters:

Colin- An average teenager.  When he gets with Jasmine he's happy and proud to be with her, as well as worried that she's too good for him and so won't stay with him. so he takes their break up hard.  He has a deep love and appreciation for the Beatles.

Jasmine- A beautiful sophomore.  Loves her health food and is a believer in Buddhism and karma.  Has a 'slightly' unstable personality.  She reacts badly to her father keep cheating on her mother.

Karl- Colin's 'best friend'.  A blue eyed, blond haired, womanising star football player.

Chester- A guy with issues.  After his father died when he was young he ran away and got involved with drugs.  He has a fascination with Napoleon, is very intelligent but comes out with some crazy stuff.

Liz- Another girl around college.  Colin considers her plain compared to Jasmine but she's kind and cares for Colin.  A more stable personality.

Mrs. Vesquez- The middle ages Spanish Lit teacher that Colin forms a friendship with.  They bond over their losses and love of the Beatles.

Writing Style- Bert Murray has a really simple, easy to read and follow writing style.  The chapters are really short and so the story is well paced and doesn't have the chance to become slow or dull.

Rating- 4/5 stars.  The last sentence in the books sums this book up nicely- "An education in the geography of the human heart".  I like that this book is realistic, and I felt as I was reading that I knew someone like each of the characters which made them relatable and the story seem even more realistic.
I sussed Karl from the beginning, I took an instant dislike to him and I was proved right there.  Jasmine's mood swings really irritated me and I felt compelled to slap her (an author managing to evoke such an emotive response deserves a round of applause).  I really felt for Colin and I found myself really wanting him to get over it and move on, and WAKE UP and see that Liz was everything he needed and that Jasmine was nothing more than a shallow, self-absorbed nut case.
Chester really made this book for me.  He was hilarious but at the same time I really felt for him and wanted him to get better and I really wanted him to be with Susan.
I loved the references to the Beatles.  For me it made the book stand out and be a little bit different.
It may be set in the 1980's but I think the lessons are timeless and teenagers do go through this.
I would definitely recommend this for fans of realistic fiction and also Beatles/ Classic rock fans.

Vampire Darcy's Desire by Regina Jeffers

  • Paperback: 440 pages
  • Publisher: Ulysses Press; Original edition (7 Jan 2010)
  • Language English
  • ISBN-10: 1569757313
  • ISBN-13: 978-1569757314
This is the greatest literary love story of all time, transformed into a heart-pounding vampire tale of romance, lust, and danger. In Austen's original novel, Darcy and Elizabeth are compelled to overcome countless obstacles - but that's nothing compared to what they face in "Darcy's Hunger". This inventive, action-packed novel tells of a tormented Darcy who comes to 'Netherfield' to escape the intense pressure on him to marry. Dispirited by his family's 200-year curse and his fate as a half-human/half-vampire dampir, Darcy would rather live forever alone than inflict the horrors of a vampire life on a beautiful wife. Destiny has other plans. Darcy meets Elizabeth and finds himself yearning for her as a man and driven to possess her as a vampire. Uncontrollably drawn to each other, their complex relationship forces them to confront their pride and prejudice like never before and to wrestle with the seductive power of forbidden love. Meanwhile, dark forces are at work all around them. Most ominous is the threat from George Wickham, the purveyor of the curse, a demon who vows to destroy each generation of Darcys and currently has evil intentions for the vulnerable Georgiana.

I normally stay away from Classic adaptations for fear of authors butchering a beloved classic but when I picked this one up the synopsis piqued my curiousity and I'm so glad that I did.

Cover: I really like the cover, it's an image that would easily be placed on a classic novel and then the addition of the vampire bite and blood showing that it's something a little bit different.

Plot: What if Mr Darcy held himself aloof because of a two hundred year old curse making him a dhampir?  Darcy has pledged to remain alone rather than continue his family's curse on any off spring.  Resolute not to marry so as to spare an innocent the reality of his life, this has worked out fine until he meets Elizabeth Bennet.  She brings light into his life and for the first time makes him feel like a normal man.

Characters:

Fitzwilliam Darcy- Noble and honourable character.  He decides on a life alone to spare others a life with his curse but he can't fight his attraction and growing love for Eizabeth.

Elizabeth Bennet- Strong and independently minded Elizabeth makes up her own heart and mind about Darcy and when she learns his secret she won't give up on him.

George Wickham- As with the original Wickham is Darcy's enemy and has been around since the curse was bestowed on the Darcy line and has gone after every generation of the Darcy's.  A full vampire that creates minions and wants nothing more than Darcy dead.

Georgiana Darcy- Darcy's younger sister.  The person Darcy's cares most for, and later Elizabeth too, but Georgiana looks like Wickham's long, lost love- the woman that caused the curse.

Writing Style:  I found Regina Jeffers had a really easy to read writing style, making it really quick to read.  Some original dialogue is included and it's great to see it used in a slightly different context and keeps the humour of Jane Austen's writing.

Rating:  4/5 stars.  I enjoyed this book so much, and I think this is because we saw more from Darcy's perspective and as a huge Darcy fan this made the book for me.  There was also parts from Wickham's perspective, letting the reader into his mind set.  Of course there is Elizabeth's perspective too.
Some parts seamlessly transitioned into a gothic/paranormal novel whereas some parts seemed a little forced.
I would recommend this for fans of the paranormal genre, particularly for fans of vampires and the vampire/dhampir plot is a great one and is probably different from others you'd have read.  Not all fans of the orginal Pride and Prejudice will enjoy this but if you like paranormal romance you might do or you might not.  It's kind of a gamble.
You also don't have to be a fan of the original to enjoy this adaptation.
I enjoyed this so much that I will be checking out Regina Jeffers other books and maybe other classic adaptations.

In the spotlight today is RJ Gonzales at RJ Does Books on blogger and MrRJGonzales on YouTube.

He is a great reviewer, that's honest about the books but is still respectful and mindful that hard work went into the book and so never intends to hurt the authors feelings.  His sense of humour and personality make his videos fun to watch.

He is also a self published author, his book Mundahlia sounds amazing and as it's up high on my 'desperately want to read list'  I hope that it comes to paperback in the UK soon.

Booking Through Thursday

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Booking Through Thursday and a different question is posted every week.

What’s the last book you were really EXCITED to read?
And, were you excited about it in advance? Or did the excitement bloom while you were reading it?
Are there any books you’re excited about right NOW?

Wow this was hard to answer because I'm excited for so many books all of the time!

I was really excited to read Divergent by Veronica Roth because it was a dystopian which was a genre I hadn't read before but it had received so much praise from fellow YA Reviewers that I felt I had to read it.  And it lived up to my excitement!!  So I was excited before, during and after I read it.

There are always books I'm excited about but I'm excited to read Hourglass by Myra McEntire- can't wait to buy that, but also Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins which is on my shelf waiting for me to read.
