Booking Through Thursday 30/07/2015 'Storage'

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Booking Through Thursday and a different question is posted every week.

"How do you store your books? On bookcases? In piles? In piles on bookcases? Are they sorted? Do you know where everything is? What’s the most creative storage you’ve seen or used for your books?"

I store my books on shelves- and I try to keep them as organised as possible- by author and genre.
There are a couple of piles of books kept on my floor- but these are kept there so I know which books I need to show in my next book haul.  As soon as that is filmed- they get put away.
I don't have a physical To-Be-Read pile as I'm so fickle with what I 'feel' like reading next, that it would be a completely pointless exercise.
I also have several funky storage boxes in my room that have books in them.  While I don't like storing books this way- I simply don't have enough shelf space to do anything else.
I previously had such trouble with parting with books, even those I didn't like, that storage was becoming a problem.  But I've forced myself to get over that by having a massive book unhaul.
I unfortunately am just not creative when it comes to storing books.  I've seen some beautiful and unique shaped shelves but I simply do not have the space.  I'm all about storing the most books I can.

Waiting On Wednesday 29/07/2015 'Souls Unfractured'

Waiting on Wednesday is all about sharing the books that I'm eagerly waiting to be released.

This week the book I'm waiting on is Souls Unfractured by Tillie Cole, the third book in the Hades Hangmen series.
I read the first two books in this series back to back in February this year, and absolutely fell in love, so have been dying to read this one.
Released August 11th.
I will be taking part in the blogtour for this one on the 12th August so keep your eyes peeled for that.

22107214"For fractured souls are like magnets.
Drawn to collide into an impossible bliss…"

Labeled a ‘Cursed’ woman of Eve from birth, Maddie has endured nothing but pain and repression at the hands of The Order’s most abusive elder, Moses. Now living with her sister in The Hangmen’s secluded compound, finally, Maddie, is free. Free from the suffocating faith she no longer believes in. Free from endless years of physical and mental torment.

Just… free…

At age twenty-one, the timid and shy Maddie is content to live within the confines of her new home—safe from the outside world, safe from harm and, strangely, protected by the Hangmen’s most volatile member; the heavily pierced and tattooed, Flame.

Flame.

The man who ceaselessly watches over her with his midnight dark and searing eyes. The man who protects her with a breath-taking intensity. And the man who stirs something deep within her numbed heart.

But when circumstances conspire for Flame to need HER help, Maddie bravely risks it all for the broken man who has captivated her fragile soul.

The Hangmen’s most infamous member, Flame, is ruled by one thing—anger. Plagued by haunting demons from his past, an all-consuming rage, and isolated by an abhorrent hatred of being touched, Flame's days are filled with suffocating darkness, pierced only by a single ray of light—Maddie. The shy, beautiful woman he cannot purge from his thoughts. The woman he has an overwhelming need to possess…
... the only person who has ever been able to touch him.

Flame’s mission in life is to protect Maddie, to keep her safe. Until a trigger from his troubled past sends him spiraling into madness, trapping him in the deepest recesses of his disturbed mind.

His Hangmen brothers fear that Flame is beyond saving.

His only hope of salvation: Maddie and her healing light.

Dark Contemporary Romance.
Contains explicit sexual situations, violence, disturbingly sensitive and taboo subjects, offensive language, and very mature topics.
Recommended for age 18 years and over.

“If you didn’t recognise me, then why did you come up to me like that?"Was she joking?  Did she truly think that the only reason a guy would approach her was because she was famous and he wanted to say he’d made out with a celebrity?  Wanting to be as honest with her this morning as he’d been scuzzy the night before, he said “You are the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, but it was more than just your beauty that drew me, Serena.”  When she looked back up at him, he felt as though he was falling into her deep blue eyes.  “You saw me.”

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh

17571564Paperback: 384 pages
Publisher: Square Peg (31 Oct. 2013)
ISBN-10: 0224095374
ISBN-13: 978-0224095372

This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative--like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it--but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book:

Pictures
Words
Stories about things that happened to me
Stories about things that happened to other people because of me
Eight billion dollars*
Stories about dogs
The secret to eternal happiness*

*These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Cover:  I love this fun cover.  It just makes me smile inexplicably.

This book has been sitting on my shelf for nearly two years.
I have absolutely no idea why.  It was amazing.
I couldn't put it down from the moment I picked it up.
Allie Brosh's unique way of story telling through picutres drawn on paint- just sucked me right in.
And it's hilarious.  Actually laugh out loud funny.  I actually had to stop reading at some point because I was hurting from laughing so much.
The serious issue of depression is handled so well.  The humour not completely outweighing the seriousness.
But Allie Brosh has written in such a way- that I feel an affinity to to her, and her crazy animated figure.
There were some situations (OK- quite a few of them) where in my head I was screaming, "that's me!", "I'm just like that!"
This book was so relatable and since reading it- have been non-stop recommending it to everyone I know.
Only regret?
Not reading it sooner.
5/5 stars.

Some of my favourite panels.

Booking Through Thursday 23/07/2015 'Harper Lee'

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Booking Through Thursday and a different question is posted every week.

So … will you be reading Go Set a Watchman: A Novel? Why? Why not? What do you think of this whole deal? Harper Lee, after all, is famous for insisting she wouldn’t publish another book, and now this … and the controversy about Atticus? Discuss!

I won't be reading Go Set a Watchman: A Novel, at least not any time soon.
Because I haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird.  That- I've considered picking up recently because a few BookTuber friends have said it's their favourite book of all time, so I know how highly asteemed it is.
I have seen the controversy spring up regarding the sequel.  And the first thought that came to mind- was that it was a money spinner.  Cynical I know.
Seems odd that so many years later a sequel springs to life.
For fans I know how they must be feeling.  Half excitement that suddenly there's more from their favourite author and characters, half dread because their expectations are so high.
I think there will be a lot of escatic people out there, matched only by those that are disappointed.

Waiting On Wednesday 22/07/2015 'The Bourbon Kings'

Waiting on Wednesday is all about sharing the books that I'm eagerly waiting to be released.

This week the book that I'm waiting on is The Bourbon Kings by J.R. Ward, released 28th July.
I'm a fan of J.R. Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood, and I've enjoyed what I've read of her Fallen Angel series, but I haven't read any of her contemporary novels- and I'm intruiged by the sounds of this one.

23355896The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood delivers the first novel in an enthralling new series set amid the shifting dynamics of a Southern family defined by wealth and privilege—and compromised by secrets, deceit, and scandal....

For generations, the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world. Their sustained wealth has afforded them prestige and privilege—as well as a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that by all appearances plays by the rules of good fortune and good taste. Downstairs, the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade. And never the twain shall meet.

For Lizzie King, Easterly’s head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing that she intended or wanted—and their bitter breakup only served to prove her instincts were right. Now, after two years of staying away, Tulane is finally coming home again, and he is bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane’s beautiful and ruthless wife; not his older brother, whose bitterness and bad blood know no bounds; and especially not the ironfisted Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many, many terrible secrets.

As family tensions—professional and intimately private—ignite, Easterly and all its inhabitants are thrown into the grips of an irrevocable transformation, and only the cunning will survive.

A Pound of Flesh by Sophie Jackson

    24928846
  • Paperback: 448 pages
  • Publisher: Headline Eternal (9 Jun. 2015)
  • ISBN-10: 1472224639
  • ISBN-13: 978-1472224637
Wes Carter is a bad boy hero you won't be able to resist.

And
A Pound of Flesh is a love story you won't want to stop talking about.

Fans of Samantha Young, Jodi Ellen Malpas, Jamie McGuire, Katy Evans will find this powerful love story utterly addictive and unforgettable.

Their love is forbidden. But won't be denied... Can true love heal the deepest scars?

For Kat Lane, teaching inmates at a New York prison is her way of upholding the legacy of her beloved father, murdered fifteen years ago. But when new student Wes Carter walks into her classroom, she's shaken by the strength of her attraction to him. Carter is as handsome as he is dangerous, as mysterious as he is quick-witted - and he ensures people keep their distance. Yet vibrant Kat bypasses his defences and challenges him to reveal the real man behind the intimidating reputation. As their emotional barriers crumble, their inescapable but forbidden feelings cannot be ignored. But will Kat's discovery of Carter's role on the night her father died force them apart...or bind their hearts for ever?

A Pound of Flesh is a tale of loyalty, redemption and all-consuming love against the odds, introducing an irresistible bad boy hero...

Cover:  I actually really like this cover.  So glad that it doesn't have a Sylvia Day or E.L. James type cover so that it's not type cast as being 'that type of book'.  Also really fond of the U.S cover for this.  Both are quite 'strong' and compelling covers.

I'm in love.
With this book and with Wes Carter.
I cannot put across just how much I enjoyed reading this book.
By the synopsis I thought it would be a 'me' book- opposites attract- breath taking romance.
But I thought it sounded a lot like Hard Time by Cara McKenna which I read last year, and didn't overly enjoy.
So when I picked this one up, I had hopes for it, but it surpassed them all.
These characters were so well fleshed out.  So cookie cutters here.
Kat wants to fulfill a promise to her father, so teaches at a prison as a way to give back.  She struggles with guilt after the death of her father and misses him terribly.  Her job causes tension between herself and her mother.
Carter is an inmate at the prison.  Seemingly a common criminal, there's more to him than there appears- especially as to how he ended up in prison in the first place.
And while Kat starts to teach Carter, there may be some history between them that neither expected.
I loved that we got both Kat and Carter's points of view in alternating chapters.  I love it when books have this, as it gives you a much more well rounded view of both characters thoughts and feelings.
Not only the attraction and chemistry between Kat and Carter, but the connection- was amazing.  I felt the pull between them.  It was amazing to read.
The cover and the title may be slightly misleading.  While there are definitely erotic moments, that is not the focus of the book at all.  There's a lot more storytelling and depth to it.
I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone and everyone- but particularly fellow romance fans.
But back off Wes Carter- he's mine.

5/5 stars.
I look forward to the next book in this series.

Waiting On Wednesday 15/07/2015 'Oblivion'

Waiting on Wednesday is all about sharing the books that I'm eagerly waiting to be released.

This week, the book I'm waiting on is Oblivion by Kelly Creagh, the conclusion to the Nevermore trilogy.
This has been long awaited.  I first read Nevermore back in 2010, when it was published.
The sequel, Enshadowed was then published in 2012- which I've held off reading until the third book was published so I could marathon them- because the first book had an insane cliffhanger, and didn't want to risk the same thing with book 2.
Little did I know it would be three years until it was published,
I'm looking forward to getting back to this series- I loved Nevermore so much.
Released July 28th.

9755769This electrifying conclusion to the Nevermore trilogy takes one last trip to the dream world of Edgar Allan Poe to reveal the intertwined fates of Isobel and Varen.

The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins? —Edgar Allan Poe

The fine line between life and death blurred long ago for Isobel Lanley. After a deadly confrontation with Varen in the dreamworld, she’s terrified to return to that desolate and dangerous place. But when her nightmares resume, bleeding into reality, she is left with no choice. Varen’s darkness is catching up to her. To everything. Threatening to devour it all.

Isobel fears for her world. For her sanity and Varen’s—especially after a fresh and devastating loss. To make matters worse, the ghostly demon Lilith wants Varen for her own, and she will do anything to keep him in her grasp—anything.

Can Isobel ever find her happy ending? Worlds collide and fates are sealed in this breathtaking finale to the Nevermore trilogy.

All A Heart Needs (Callaways #5) by Barbara Freethy

20619156
  • Format: Kindle Edition
  • File Size: 1306 KB
  • Print Length: 300 pages
  • Publisher: Fog City Publishing, LLC (27 Feb. 2014)
  • ASIN: B00I8VPYEA
In ALL A HEART NEEDS, the fifth book in the Callaway Series, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Barbara Freethy delivers an emotional, heartwarming romance as well as a tantalizing mystery.

Sean Callaway is the black sheep of the Callaway clan, the sibling who refused to follow in the family tradition of firefighting. Instead, he lives his life in music. On the outside, he's a free-spirited rock star, but on the inside, Sean is haunted by the death of a childhood friend, a tragedy no one knows he witnessed. He's kept the secret for twenty years. But nothing stays hidden forever…

Jessica Schilling, a young widow, moved to San Francisco to reunite her six-year-old stepson with his long-lost identical twin brother, Brandon. She rents a house just around the corner from the Callaways, and while cleaning out the garage for the previous owner Jessica stumbles upon a very old secret—one that someone might just be willing to kill to keep.

Suddenly, Sean is thrust back into the past. He's forced to face his most disturbing memories, not only to solve the riddle of the tragedy that ripped his life apart, but also to save the woman he loves…

Cover:  I love all the covers in this series.  Sweet, romantic covers.  This one is no exception.

I was reading this series to take part in the blogtour, but got completely hooked on the series, and ending up reading it in its entirety - back to back.
All A Heart Needs is the fifth installment in the series.
We first met Jessica in the previous book, and after the events of that book, she moves to Francisco to be closer to the Callaways.
Sean and Jessica met in the previous book, and they instantly became friends, but they have to ignore the attraction between them.  If things went bad between them it would have ramifications on her relationship with the rest of the Callaways, making the entire thing awkward.  Especially as Sean, musician that he is, doesn't want to settle down.
But, try as they might, they find themselves increasingly drawn together.  Particularly as they try to solves the mystery of Sean's childhood friend's death.
I loved the chemistry between Sean and Jessica.  I believed it 100%.  I enjoyed watching them try to stay away from each other, but failing miserably.
I liked seeing Jessica become entwined with the Callaway family as if she belonged there, and seeing Sean, the black sheep, eventually find his way home.
The mystery of Sean's childhood friend's death was also good.  I was definitely intrigued and loved the reveal.
Over all, I loved this book, and it has become one of my favourites in this series.

4/5 stars.

On Dublin Street (On Dublin Street #1) by Samantha Young

    16146736
  • Format: Kindle Edition
  • Print Length: 415 pages
  • Publisher: Penguin (25 Oct. 2012)
  • ASIN: B009TKD6XA
Jocelyn Butler has been hiding from her past for years. But all her secrets are about to be laid bare . . .

Four years ago, Jocelyn left her tragic past behind in the States and started over in Scotland, burying her grief, ignoring her demons, and forging ahead without attachments. Her solitary life is working well - until she moves into a new apartment on Dublin Street, where she meets a man who shakes her carefully guarded world to its core.

Braden Carmichael is used to getting what he wants, and he's determined to get Jocelyn into his bed. Knowing how skittish she is about entering a relationship, Braden proposes an arrangement that will satisfy their intense attraction without any strings attached.

But after an intrigued Jocelyn accepts, she realizes that Braden won't be satisfied with just mind-blowing passion. The stubborn Scotsman is intent on truly knowing her . . . down to the very soul.

Incredibly passionate and downright romantic, On Dublin Street is a captivating and bittersweet story of the redemptive power of love.

Cover:  A rather sexy cover.  Not my favourite cover, but I do like it.  And I appreciate that it's not a Fifty Shades type cover, i.e. an artsy photo of a piece of jewelry or a shoe or something like that.

I've read a couple of books in this series- but I've read them out of order (bad Erin!).
I liked them, but didn't love them.  But I still enjoyed them enough that I still wanted to go back and read the first books in the series.
And this one- I loved.  This was a great adult contemporary read.
The chemistry between Joss and Braden set my Kindle on fire.
I loved them.  Braden is an unapologetic caveman.  And I can't lie- I love me some possessive heroes.
I really felt for Jocelyn.  She's lost everyone in her life that she's ever loved- so she spends her life pushing people away, making sure nobody gets close.  Reluctant to lose someone again.
If they can't get close, it can't hurt to lose them.
But Braden and his sister Ellie make that difficult.
I loved this one.  Seeing Braden relentlessly pursue Joss.  Breaking down her walls.
If you love adult contemporary reads- with some serious steam, I definitely recommend picking this one up.
4.5/5 stars.

17334390“”Will you miss me, Dad?”

                Now, you have to remember
That my dad and I hardly shared
Fifty words in any given day
I’d just used up one tenth of my allotment.

                Miss you? I don’t even

                Know you, Pattyn.

His admission stung.  Enough
to stick a big ol’ lump in my throat.
Enough to give me the courage
To ask, around the lump,

“Whose fault is that?”

His hands tensed on the wheel
and I could see the little veins
at his temples swell and plump faster.
Too much to think about?

                Enough blame to go
                around I guess.

He wanted me to let it drop.I wasn’t about to give him his way.
He could blame me for many things.
But not for the closeness we’d lost."

Vicious Cycle (Vicious Cycle #1) by Katie Ashley

    24501432
  • Format: Kindle Edition
  • File Size: 1458 KB
  • Print Length: 336 pages
  • Publisher: Headline Eternal (2 Jun. 2015)
  • ASIN: B00S53JF9G
New York Times bestselling author Katie Ashley revs up the danger and sexual tension in her brand-new Vicious Cycle romance series.

Deacon Malloy’s life is dedicated to the Hell’s Raiders motorcycle club. Tough, hard, and fast with his fists, he serves the group as sergeant at arms. But his devil-may-care approach to life is thrown for a loop when the five-year-old daughter he never knew existed lands on the club steps.

Alexandra Evans is devoted to all her students—but there’s always been something about Willow Malloy that tugs at her heart. There’s an aura of sadness about her, a girl in need of all the love Alexandra can give. When Willow stops coming to school, Alexandra’s search leads to a clubhouse full of bikers…and a father hell-bent on keeping his daughter always within sight.

The moment Deacon sees Alexandra, he has to have her in his bed—and he’s never met a woman yet who couldn’t be persuaded. No matter how attracted she is to Deacon, Alexandra refuses to be just another conquest. But it’s Deacon himself who could be seduced—into a brighter future for himself, his daughter, and the woman he’s falling for against all odds.

Cover: A rather sexy cover.  Not my favourite cover ever, but I like it.  What;s not to like.

I loved the sound of this one.
This year I've read a couple of other MC series.
Undeniable by Madeline Sheehan and Hades Hangmen by Tillie Cole.
One I found OK, the other I absolutely love.
So I'm always on the lookout now for similar books, and this one definitely sounded like it fit the bill from the synopsis which drew me in.
A typical opposites attract story- definitely drew me in.
A schoolteacher and a Motorcycle Club Sergeant at arms.  Couldn't get more opposite if you tried.
I found the book started off great.  Introducing the characters, and how Alex- worried for Willow ends up agreeing to home tutor her so she doesn't fall behind because of having to stay at the club compound for her safety.
There's a sizzle of attraction between Alex and Deacon.
But suddenly they are just making out in a basement.  It really was sudden.
I don't feel there was a good build up.  It just happened.  So it didn't come across as real, or believable.  Their relationship went from zero to 100 in two seconds flat.
I also feel I didn't get to know them as well as I could have.  The fast pace let the character development fall down.
However, it was a fun, quick read, and I would definitely pick up the next book in the series, as I'm so intrigued by Rev's character.
3/5 stars.

Read from June 23 to 25, 2015
